Roughly one in five American adults takes vitamin D and calcium supplements. But a long-awaited report released last month proclaimed the pills largely unnecessary for healthy people. The supplements provide no additional benefit according to the best available research, and too many can be dangerous, the report said.
While vitamin D and calcium are clearly important for bone health, write the authors of the review, evidence on whether they help heart health is conflicting.
Seventy-eight percent of women over age 20 get less than 100 percent of the daily value of calcium and during winter months it's often harder to participate in bone boosting activities. Dear Dr. Donohue: My question concerns vitamin D. I am a 68-year-old woman who takes calcium supplements daily. Almost all calcium supplements today contain vitamin D. Do I need to find a calcium supplement that does not contain vitamin D?
Data from our nine-month study examining the effects of resistance exercise on muscle, bone, fat and blood pressure reveal that resistance exercise with accompanying shakes and daily calcium/vitamin D supplements appear to be an effective means for developing a stronger musculoskeletal system, thereby reducing the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
