Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to depression, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center psychiatrists working with the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study. It is believed to be the largest such investigation ever undertaken.
The body naturally absorbs vitamin D when skin is directly exposed to the sun outdoors. The shorter and often overcast days during the winter months make people, especially those living in the northern half of the United States, more at risk for vitamin D deficiency.
While the results show correlation and not causation, researchers from the University Hospital Carlos Haya in Malaga note that it is biologically plausible that vitamin D may reduce the incidence of diabetes, including influencing the function of beta-cells, cells in the pancreas that control insulin production.
