Can Nutritional Supplements ADHD Options Help?By Sue Perkins The majority of children with ADHD will be diagnosed by the time they reach 7 years old. There is currently no 'cure' for ADHD, although there are treatments designed to treat the symptoms. The most popular treatment appears to be stimulant medications. However, these are not always suitable for everyone for various reasons and so people often look to other means for controlling ADHD behaviors and nutritional supplements is one option. So, do nutritional supplements ADHD options help with ADHD? It is largely agreed that AHDH is a condition that is centered on the brain and is most likely genetic. The brain is a complex organ with thousands of connections all working towards making us who we are. Studies have shown that a number of people with ADHD are born with a neurotransmitter deficiency. Neurotransmitters are located in the brain and are responsible for controlling behavior, learning ability and mood. Being deficient in neurotransmitters can dramatically impact on a person's learning ability and can lead to erratic behavior. ADHD medications like Ritalin are designed to try and replicate neurotransmitters, however, the effects can be short-term and wear off after a few hours. Nutritional supplements on the other hand aim to restore balance in the body and replenish the neurotransmitters, thereby calming ADHD behaviors. Neurotransmitters rely on amino acids. The body produces some amino acids naturally, however there are amino acids, called Essential amino acids, that the body can't produce and is reliant on receiving sufficient quantities from the food ingested. Proteins are an excellent source of amino acids, however the body does not store extra amino acids so it's vital to receive a sufficient intake each day. This can prove a little tricky, especially for children who can be picky eaters. Essential amino acids are available as supplements, however the dosages should be adjusted according to height and weight. There are a number of different amino acids and they can be supplemented separately or together in a combination supplement. Memory, concentration, aggression and depression can all often be improved through taking amino acid supplements. Other supplements that are useful for individuals with ADHD are: 1) DMAE- Dimethyaminoethanol is a naturally occurring substance that is produced by the brain and is also found in fish. DMAE has been shown to improve concentration, alertness, memory and an increased attention span. 2) Magnesium - From a number of studies it has been noticed that children with ADHD have a deficiency in magnesium. In one study, 75 children had both a magnesium deficiency and were also diagnosed with ADHD. One group of children was given magnesium supplements to take alongside standard treatments and the remaining group only had the standard treatments. Those taking the magnesium supplements displayed significant improvements in behavior compared to the other group. 3) Fish Oil Supplements - As a result of research it is known that the brain is made up of 60% fats, with omega-3 fats playing a large role; high concentrations of which are also found in oily fish. A trial was carried out on 120 children between the ages of 6 - 12 with dyspraxia (difficulty planning and completing fine motor tasks like cleaning teeth) and most with ADHD and/or dyslexia (reading diability). Half the children took fish oil supplements for 3 months while the rest were given a placebo. Those children taking the fish oils showed marked improvement in inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
