Supplements and Vitamins ADHD Treatment Options

Children with ADHD are special. Their behavior is not caused by being naughty or difficult, rather it is down to mis-firing connections within the brain. Inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity characterize ADHD. The common treatment method is prescription medications, however, this doesn't have to be the only option. Supplement and Vitamins ADHD treatments can result in significant improvements in ADHD behavior. Below are some of the vitamins and supplements that have shown to have positive effect:

The B-vitamins - The B-vitamins aid in the conversion of the carbohydrates into sugar or glucose. These are then burned so we can produce the energy that is needed by our bodies. B-vitamins are essential vitamins for ADHD as they are known to promote the normal development of the brain and are also helpful in the creation of the brain chemicals called the serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

These brain chemicals promote the improvement in the behavior of children with ADHD as they control mood, aggression, anxiety, the ability to think clearly, emotional stability and personal accountability.

The essential fatty acids - Essential fatty acids are those which can not be created by the human body but need to be taken as part of a diet. Certain foods such as fish oils and nut oils are among sources of essential fatty acids. The essential fatty acids are omega-6, linoleic acid, and omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid. Studies show that children who are deficient in omega-3 also display behavioral and learning difficulties.

Iron. Iron is essential in the production of neurotransmitters in the brain and aids in the regulation of the dopamine, also a neurotransmitter. Reduced levels of iron can lead to learning and behavioral difficulties deficiency among.

L-carnitine. Studies have shown that supplementing with L-carnitine had a positive effect on boys with ADHD, increasing attention span and reducing aggressive behaviors. However, it should always be taken with food or it can cause an upset stomach.

Magnesium. Studies have shown that children with ADHD tend to be deficient in Magnesium. Deficiencies in magnesium are associated with feelings of depression and anxiety, restlessness and irritability. Supplementing with magnesium may lead to reduced hyperactivity in children with ADHD.

Vitamin B6. B6 promotes the healthy development of the brain so that the neurotransmitters would be normally stabilized. Deficiencies in vitamin B-6 tends to result in hyperactivity. Supplementing with vitamin B-6, studies have shown, can reduce hyperactivity.

Zinc. Again a number of children with ADHD tend to have a zinc deficiency. One study showed that zinc levels in ADHD kids was two thirds the level of zinc found in children without ADHD. Zinc is vital for memory and thinking functioning and can also improve IQ.

Vitamin C. In a 3-month study where children with ADHD where given Vitamin C along with flax seed oil all of them saw improvements in ADHD behaviors. All the children completed the study and there were no side effects reported
