Are dietary supplements harmful?
Answered By Editor
Dietary supplements should not be taken
without consulting a dietician or a doctor
first. When dietary supplements are taken
along with prescription drugs, they can have
harmful side effects.
Harvard Medical School and other medical
institutions have done numerous studies on
dietary suppplements and their effects. It
is especially alarming considering that more
than one in every five people who take
prescription drugs also uses dietary
supplements without telling their doctors.
Even herbal supplements as simple as ginseng
and gingko can cause side effects with
prescription medicine. Some dietary
supplements are more harmful than others and
can lead to insomnia, heart disease, cancer,
and arthritis.
Advertisements may claim innumerable
advantages of their dietary supplements but
often fail to highlight when and how they
should be taken. So, it is best to check with
your doctor before taking any dietary supplement.
